“The heavenly brightness”

A Waikiki beachside home away from home

Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom had a home and a beachside cottage in this location, which she fondly called Kealohilani – the Royal Light or Heavenly Brightness. The surrounding area housed the highest concentration of Royal residences anywhere in the islands, and was cherished by chiefs and royalty as a place to meet, gather and relax. Many of these chiefly residences were kauhale, a cluster of interdependent structures or hale (habitats) that housed the vital functions and activities.

The Queen considered this area to be the most life-giving district on the entire island. It was a place she used both as a sought-after retreat and where she displayed her Hawaiian hospitality as she entertained others. More than 200 years later, Waikiki continues to attract millions of visitors to its shores to reconnect, rejuvenate, relax and experience Hawaiian culture.

Our resort accommodation in Waikiki is proudly named in honor of the Queen and her beachside home: ʻAlohilani.
